The Sayre Mansion was the first house built in the wealthy neighborhood called Fountain Hill in Bethlehem – more than a hundred years ago. Not only did Robert Heysham Sayre – chief engineer of the Lehigh Valley Railroad – build the Sayre Mansion, but he also founded the Fountain Hill Opera House and assisted in the building of the Bethlehem Iron Works, which later would become Bethlehem Steel.
Christmas City USA
A tradition which began in 1937, the Citizens Christmas City Committee helps
to organize and plan the look of Christmas in the City of Bethlehem –
including the display of over 800 trees that will be lit (sparkling white
lights adorn those trees in the Historic Moravian District and beautiful,
LED colored lights on the trees in the SouthSide Arts District) during this
2015 Christmas season.
The entire Bethlehem retail district is festively decorated featuring beautiful
door and window displays and complimentary holiday refreshments to beckon and
revive any would-be weary Christmas shopper. Christmas-themed carriage rides,
bus tours and walking tours – there is even a “Live Advent Calendar” – provide visitors a traditional, enriching holiday experience – the authentically-costumed guides leading the way to the museums and historically-preserved houses decorated as they would have been by the Moravians who occupied them in the 17 and 1800’s.
Named by Travel and Leisure Magazine in 2006, One of the Top Holiday Markets in the
Entire World – Bethlehem’s Christkindlmarkt is an arts & crafts market modeled after Europe’s open-air holiday marketplaces. Set under large heated tents, this holiday outdoor emporium features vendors catering to the entire array of possible gift-giving ideas – including Christmas-themed crafts and artwork. There is, of course, entertainment and fun activities for the kids – not to mention the perfunctory visit
from you-know-who (Santa Claus).
