About Persian Hamadan Rugs

Overview

Steeped in history and tradition, Persian Hamadan rugs are considered among the very best in tribal rugs. These rare and valuable, fine quality, durable carpets feature geometric designs in rich vibrant jewel-like tones - bright blues, aqua greens and warm beiges set upon fields of deep indigo and rose madder.

A Distinctive & Unique Style

The Hamadan Rug Style - typical theme for the Hamadan carpet - consists of elaborate and finely-detailed geometrical and/or floral patterns - as seen here - featuring tribal-like figures and a hexagonal-shaped center medallion. These colorful hand-woven rugs typically feature a base palette of natural-dyed indigo blues and madder reds.

Listed in the Bible by the name Ekbatana, Hamadan, a city located in western Iran, is one of the worlds oldest-known carpet-trading centers. Rugs manufactured in this ancient city were of a considerably high quality - similiar in structure to the Bidjar carpets - and are, not surprisingly, somewhat rare on the market today.

Consumer Notes

Hamadan rugs are woven with the Persian-type asymmetric knot - also referred to as the "City Knot" - the knot density ranging up to 700 KPSI (knots per square inch), which is very fine quality. The number of thread layers that have been used in each warp-thread during manufacture determines quality; The lower the number the finer and higher the knot density.
